Engagement shows how people feel. Capacity shows what they can sustain. Together, they unlock performance.
The Thrive Index is one score, built from two halves: Capacity — whether people can perform — and Engagement — whether they want to. Each half has four domains, and every domain is scored from the statements beneath it.
No wearable, laboratory or biometric data is required. The statements are behaviour-anchored and informed by physiological research — employees answer a survey, not a device.
People arrive with fuel in the tank, ready to take on work.
The week gives back what it takes — people start restored, not depleted.
Time and headspace for deep work, without constant interruption.
People stay steady when the pressure spikes.
Whether the work feels worth doing, and connects visibly to something that matters.
Whether people trust their manager and senior leaders, and believe decisions are made in the open.
Whether there is a visible path forward, and the tools, clarity and authority to move work along.
How people experience teamwork and inclusion — and whether they feel part of something bigger.
The four capacity domains and four engagement domains combine into the Thrive Index, read against employee capacity and employee engagement separately. Full derivation: the methodology, built by our research team.
higher retention scores in high capacity & engagement teams
higher odds of above-median throughput
more likely to adapt and learn faster
more likely to give discretionary effort
more likely to perform above median
more likely to generate new ideas
fewer absence days
swing between the highest and lowest quartile — +85 vs −46
Figures are the largest differences observed across organisations in our validation work, comparing teams in the highest Capacity and Engagement quartile with those in the lowest. Effects vary by sector, size and baseline. See the methodology →
